“Later, when I was traveling with Bill [Evans], on occasion I’d be in Copenhagen and I’d sit in with Ben Webster, some of these other great players. I was lucky. And these people were very good to me. It meant a lot. Dizzy [Gillespie] was like that-when I got to play with him he was serious but very good-natured, and it made you feel welcome. I didn’t do well getting yelled at. Some people can handle it."
