“I have no appreciation on what the term "director" is. They might as well disappear—no one really needs them. Anyhow, the theatre up until the 19th century was doing great without them. Nowadays, we've come to the point of reading critics saying "the director didn't help him enough". Help you with what? What's the use of the director? Is he supposed to guide you? Why would someone ought to guide you? The theatre is a group. A whole. It's the playwright and the acting troupe. Attached to each other. That's it—that's the theatre. It doesn't fit to no one else. Do you want one more individual to look over your shoulder? Do you want someone from backstage to observe you and tell you of his opinion? Why can't a person with a taste for the theatre be able to tell you that?”
