“For me it was very important to introduce the subject [of 'Retorno a Aztlán'] into Mexican cinema that had never been taken up again; I am very irritated by the social contempt, especially of the middle class, towards the indigenous world. The function of the film was to show this world with a lot of respect and try not to subject it to the polarity of Western civility and pre-Columbian barbarism.”
