…Burnat’s cameras take a beating as well and the filmmakers have chosen to use the camera casualties as a structuring principle for the documentary. This conceit ends up distracting a little from the heart of the story, and there are some other aesthetic missteps as well—in particular, the narration can sometimes veer into cliché. Ultimately though, as a political tool and a portrait of a village joining together in the face of occupation, 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is extremely effective.

The film is about the struggle to see clearly, and the preciousness of that clarity—it’s about how this struggle is increasingly inextricable from the struggle for social justice itself.
