Reseñas críticas

In a bit of real-life drama, 7th Heaven was postponed owing to thunderstorms: the open-air performance with Timothy Brock’s live orchestral score was rescheduled to the spectacular Teatro Communale opera house, and made for an overwhelming occasion. By really entering into the film’s unashamed melodrama, Brock transported us back in time to meet Borzage’s romantic vision on its own ground.

A world of hard cobblestones and exploding trenches softened by romance made tangible, the screen as an organism shuddering with slivers of passion, such are Borzage’s miracles. The sweep of the war sequences, with their marshaling of “the whole French army of taxi cabs” into a blazing No Man’s Land, is merely a set-up for the true spectacle, a flash of intimate belief tested and rewarded.

In his later masterpiece THE MORTAL STORM (1940), Borzage would demonize Nazism by showing a good family ripped apart by its dictates; in 7TH HEAVEN, he depicts the Great War as a force that cruelly separated the lovers of Europe.
