Alphaville is a movie about a dystopian totalitarian nation, ruled by a machine, where all the emotions are banned, like poetry and love; questioning the "unquestionable" it is, as well, not allowed and some words are completely forbidden. The concept of "the big brother is watching you" by George Orwell is completely there.
True gem! It's a VERY interesting and rare mix of sci-fi and noir and a few other elements. The setting is sci-fi, but surprisingly it's very philosophical, asking questions about time, about the fact that even if only the present (now) is what's actually existing and real, yet somehow many think most about past...It's very much poetical, focused around people, feelings, logic vs emotions... Excellent cast!
Alphaville, one of Duchamp's favorite movies, only pretends to be a silly imitation of a futuristic dystopia. In fact, it's a hellishly intelligent, layered essay on both science fiction and the ambivalent 1960's themselves. It pays a thoughtful homage to the yet unrecognized genre's past and foreshadows its future (as well as our all too real present). Dense and stylish, watching it once is simply not an option.
A film about ideas and about how to express those ideas through the medium of film. It deals with the situation of a strike and moves through a series of practical and analytical passages (“an organization of shots”, in Godard’s words) into a finale based around the process of manufacturing weapons.
An analysis of the social upheaval of May 1968 made in the immediate wake of the workers’ and students’ protests. The picture consists of two parts, each with with identical image tracks, and differing narration.
