With its comic book sensibilities, hackneyed sense of conflict and immaculate craft, amores perros could have been -and perfectly- a talented adolescent adventure, with nothing more to say than to elicit a few jolts and guilty kicks from the audience; but the pretentiousness -caused in fact by overreaching thoughtlessness- is so unbearable that the film sends itself to the gallows.
The cinematography and blocking are so good, it's worth watching the film to see those two in action. I liked the stories. They're complex and real. I'm not a huge fan of González Iñárritu's completely dour outlook on life, but you have to agree his films bring something new to the table. They are masterpieces, just not the type of films I'd watch time and time again.
A visual treat for anyone who likes Inarritu, although i prefer 21 grams. I appreciate Bernal's performance in this film, and prieto's camera work is top notch. Although i didn't really get arriaga script. Still a good film to experience.
With this director, there's never problems with the technical aspects. Couple that with a great story with 3 intertwining plots and it's hard to beat. The problem is the subject matter. I love dogs, and I don't like dogfighting, even if it is fake. Gael Garcia Bernal does an outstanding job on this movie. Feeding chocolates to a dog?! What's wrong with these people?
Elongated, 1-emotion-only narrative without an insightful conscience, having no more to say about the morality of its subject matter than the Saw films that portray senseless cruelty thinly veiled behind false feelings of emotional cleansing in an awkward and ill, non-realistic attempt to analyze and dissect the true root of the problems at hand. Like watching a PSA in a universe where the only emotion is depression.
