For all the legitimately virtuoso filmmaking in the movies of Edgar Wright, none of them (not even the mighty Hot Fuzz) can claim the same cultural resonance as Cornish’s ingenious, politically charged allegory about an apartment complex besieged by extraterrestrials on Guy Fawkes Night—it’s a wizardly piece of work of brains, heart, and nerve.

[Cornish] surprised everyone in 2011 with his crackling, suspenseful debut about the alien invasion of an imposing South London estate. While John Carpenter’s influence looms large—particularly in the way Cornish makes the most of a small budget with judicious framing and rapid storytelling—this is no mere homage. The expertly chosen urban locations and authentic South London argot lends the film a fierce sense of place, while John Boyega, in his film debut, is on commanding form.

Like all good blockbusters there are plenty of funny moments, mostly courtesy of Nick Frost (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ) as the pot dealer on the top floor, and the film eventually delivers a good guy to root for. But, the real guilty pleasure here is watching a teen thug find the tools to play the hero.
