Despite some great archive material and nice interview turns, this documentary portrait of disgraced German tennis legend Boris Becker from film-maker Alex Gibney is a frustrating and disappointing experience – because of the baffling way it is structured, both unrevealing and anticlimactic.

The production sets out with the clear goal to find out where it all went wrong for the uniquely successful tennis star, but soon strays into a classic retelling of his career... [it] has more of the makings of a PR campaign to rehabilitate the prodigy’s reputation than an unbiased documentary baring the truth.

[T]he picture serves as a deep dive into sports psychology, rather than the knotty personality study of sports documentaries such as Barney Douglas’s McEnroe.

Gibney brings his usual “friendly yet forensic” approach to the material... The film is also fabulously paced, nicely shot, and with snappy, illuminating contributions from Borg, McEnroe and an unexpectedly wry Mats Wilander.
