BOSS LEVEL

Joe Carnahan Estados Unidos, 2021
The New York Times
Directed by the B-movie expert Joe Carnahan, the lighthearted “Boss Level” is the latest iteration of the popular time-loop scenario, spelling out the video-game concept — repeat an action until you get good enough to move on — that has always fed this subgenre.

“Boss Level” compensates for its overstuffed scenario and relentless derivativeness—actually, it makes you stop caring about its relentless derivativeness—with concentrated fast pacing and breakneck action... [It] really does play like “Groundhog Day” meets “Edge of Tomorrow” meets “Smokin’ Aces” and “Smokin’ Aces 2” meets “Ready Player One” meets “Mortal Kombat” (the game), although maybe not quite in that order. If that sounds like a good time to you, I think it will be.

Perhaps foremost the movie offers a nice showcase for Grillo... The supporting players notwithstanding... this is his show, and he makes the most of it. Not that something like "Boss Level" breaks any ground, or -- with apologies to the premise -- is worth watching over and over. But for those craving an action distraction, it's a reasonably entertaining way to kill time.

One of the worst feelings to have when watching an action movie is the sinking realization that the first fight scene on offer is the best one in store. Boss Level desperately needs that kind of novelty, because it’s so familiar... It’s mostly a movie with designs on over-the-top action that are undercut by the actual action.

This film proudly wears its intentions on its sleeve and is content with not having a whole lot on its mind... Rejoice action fans, Frank Grillo is here to save the action genre, and “Boss Level” proves that he has the goods to perhaps do just that.

[The film's] failure to follow through on [its] promise, never fulfilling the potential of Frank Grillo’s lead role or its own over-the-top silliness, makes the mostly dull effort more of a grind than end-game content.

Putting “Groundhog Day” on action steroids, the film has a patina of cleverness that’s pleasing enough, but you’ve seen it before. And you’ll see it again.

As is always the case with these types of films, even the obligatory exposition scenes still leave much unexplained, and either you go with it or you don’t... Mostly, though, this is Grillo’s film to carry, and he pulls it off with a combination of brute force and light charm.

While Carnahan’s sense of humor has always been juvenile, in "Stretch" it at least benefitted from a gonzo factor and the crucial quality of having funny parts. "Boss Level", however, is clumsy from the jump, with lame gags and a ceaseless, obtrusive voice-over that is always telling us why the next part is funny or what’s happening on screen.

As the umpteenth time loop movie we’ve seen of late, "Boss Level" never offers a convincing enough argument for the gimmick to be leaned on yet again, a mishmash of better movies blended into something a little bland.

["Boss Level"] isn’t Carnahan’s best film, but it’s skillfully directed nonsense and has a big-name cast that seems to be having fun. It’s nothing groundbreaking, just good-humored bloody action directed at a frenetic pace, clocking in at about an hour and a half. Sometimes you need a little bit of fun, and “Boss Level” delivers.

The result is obviously not as smart as "Groundhog Day" or "Edge of Tomorrow", but Carnahan and company do their best to take elements from each to create a serviceable enough backbone for us to care about whether Roy succeeds... ["Boss Level"] a violent lark playing fast and loose with its science fiction so Grillo can have a blast.
