Bound for Glory

Dirigida por Hal Ashby
Estados Unidos, 1976
Drama, Biografía, Música

This film is an excellent biography of Woody Guthrie, one of America’s greatest folk singers. He left his dust-devastated Texas home in the 1930s to find work, and discovered the suffering and strength of America’s working class.

Ashby’s Woody Guthrie biopic is memorably beautiful, a big-budget, earnest production from the great director of 70s cynicism and chill. Ambitious and visually striking, “Bound for Glory” set out to amplify, if not remake, the movie that most impressed its hero: John Ford’s “The Grapes of Wrath” (1940). There is even a direct family connection: Mr. Carradine’s father, John Carradine, played Preacher Casey in Mr. Ford’s film. But unlike his father, David Carradine gives a restrained, even enigmatic, performance, effectively tempering the movie’s hagiographic impulses.
