Perhaps the dawning realization that I am finally and irrevocably middle aged has inspired in me once again to embrace the cinema’s greatest asset: its capacity to manifest the impossibly fantastical dreams of a child. My favorite cinematic memory of the year was the image of the vengeful bonobo Koba shooting a gun while riding a horse. If I had seen that when I was seven, I think my heart would have stopped beating out of pure joy. Imagine! Talking monkeys killing human beings!

Comparable in its scope and populist spirit to Spielberg films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, it’s the best work so far from Reeves and a prime example of American filmmakers’ knack for creating something fresh out of merchandise fit for yard sales.

Dawn is a war film, though it belongs to a category that might be called the reluctant war film, while the outpost, edge-of-civilization setting gives it Western overtones. Showing the brokering of a tenuous peace between two hostile peoples, undermined by the actions of determinedly belligerent parties on both sides, it shares its basic narrative elements with Delmer Daves’s 1950 Broken Arrow, if practically nothing else.
