Even more than most Wong films, Days of Being Wild is a film of languor. With its scattered characters, near-absence of narrative, and staccato rhythm (long stretches of hushed conversation punctuated by violent outbursts), the movie achingly embodies a particular state of ennui in 1960s Hong Kong, as men and women listlessly weave in and out of relationships.

More than a romantic allegory for the character’s own trajectory, Yuddy’s story evokes an expression of the impossibility of reinventing that which has already disappeared—a pursuit which only memory and cinema can realize. With the unforgettable opening credit sequence of Days, Wong brilliantly encapsulates a history of Hong Kong into a single, precise long shot.

Wong Kar-wai’s idiosyncratic style first became apparent in this gorgeously moody second feature (1991), whose romantic vision of 1960 Hong Kong as a network of unfulfilled longings would later echo through In the Mood for Love.

    DAYS OF BEING WILD and Kiarostami's CLOSE-UP are not only the key films of 1990, but probably the most paradigm-shifting cinematic landmark landmines of the then-nascent decade. DAYS is probably also the most important film ever to come out of Hong Kong. The region-free Mega Star Blu is regularly criticized; the punters say it looks shit. Please. The original film elements is what they is. This is transcendent lo-fi!

    A film about the destructive side of love, filled with melancholy, loneliness and long moments of silence that speak more than lines of dialogue, music is used sparingly, only adding to the atmosphere. I love the visual side, how light and shadow are used, and that rain... There's a sense of mystery, dreamlike distant memory, so characteristic of Wong Kar-Wai.

    Good for all of the reasons I like Wong Kar-Wai - stunning cinematography, packed and complex framing, music. But occasionally exercises some of his worst tendencies, an ever-rotating cast of characters, brief bursts of kinetic violence. A lovely film to look at, but one with unpleasant characters to spend time with, and it's ultimately not quite the sum of its parts.

    In comparison with later Wong, namely In the Mood For Love and Happy Together it may seem somewhat lesser in comparison, but still retains an incredible poignancy and sense of yearning. All of the characters in this film are reaching out desperately for something they can't touch and as the film draws to its conclusion we understand they'll never have it. Hauntingly beautiful precursor to later masterworks. 4/5

    Cinematography by Christopher Doyle. "Desire" list. Leslie Cheung: so much wounded beauty, that would became clear in "Happy Together", but more romanticized here. So, so much memorable opacified sadness.

    An exploration of how luck and chance affect life; and the most poignant part is that the characters do not realize it. The film is perfect in its technique and exploration of the mood; however it is indeed very dour. That could be a problem, but it's also the right choice when you're in the mood for melancholy. I loved the performances, but the characters feel a little distant, a fact that, in the end, is a flaw.

    this one was interesting, and by the end so full of sorrow, it was almost painful to view. the love, emotion and the obsession with the passing moment which dominates a relationship are all key components to this piece. and the style begins to move away from the scorsese-lite of 'Tears Gone by' to a much more godard and kieslowski inflected cinema. the acting here is so pitch perfect too. maggie cheung is pehnomenal.

    Stylistically this movie was fun to watch but it left me empty. I don't think there was supposed to be much to the lead character. Interesting to see Maggie Cheung. I thought she was great In the Mood for Love and 2046. She appears to play the same character, judging by the recurring name. Trying to figure out what the last scene with Tony Leung was supposed to signify.
