As the Allies march toward Paris, Hitler gives orders that nothing should be left of the city’s former glory. Assigned to carry out this act is General Dietrich von Choltitz. However, Swedish Consul Raoul Nordling steals into German headquarters and tries to persuade Choltitz to abandon his plan.

If you’ve had your fill of tony World War II dramas, this probably won’t renew your interest in the genre, but the leads are fine as usual and Schlöndorff succeeds in making the stagebound material feel reasonably cinematic. Coincidentally this same historic episode inspired the opening scene of Alain Resnais’s Same Old Song (1997), which also featured Dussollier.

Diplomacy isn’t really fooling anyone into feeling doom-laden suspense (Paris, after all, is still standing), but the principal performers sell the momentousness of the drama. The actors are a dynamic match: Dussollier’s mellow countenance belies a steadfast determination, while Arestrup’s traditionally authoritative body language functions as a smoke screen to hesitation over the legitimacy of his convictions.

Schlondorff brings an elegant precision to the film’s direction. He and cinematographer Michel Amathieuused two hand-held cameras in shooting the scenes between the two leads, which helps preserve the freshness and immediacy of the performances. And the film never feels place-bound, as some stage adaptations do, since we frequently glimpse (or the story jumps to) the story’s most important character: Paris itself.
