Elysium Dirigida por Neill Blomkamp
Elysium processes action way more smoothly than allegory, hitting its most thrilling stretches when the writer/director unleashes an inventive array of battle– tech, expertly orchestrating some crashing, smashing close–quarter combat that sees exo–suited Damon thrust into hand–to–hand combat with agile droids before taking on Copley’s kill squad.

Technical mistakes or shortcomings add to the feel of this being a film made for the people from the bottom up, even with the millions of dollars behind its every shot. There’s something much more majestic about the sweeping, impressive shots of outer space habitats coming from the mind of a young South African.

Drawing on an international cast, “Elysium” is rich with topical allusions. Writer-director Neill Blomkamp’s “District 9” (2009) was a naked Apartheid allegory, and there’s a continuation of that thread here… “Elysium” also nods to the healthcare fight and the growing income gap, so it’s a disappointment that the film ultimately doesn’t have much cogent to say—beyond having a child make the observation that helping people is a good way to make friends.

¿Qué dicen los demás?

  • ig_____or's rating of the film Elysium

I spent the whole movie craving more scenes on Elysium, since the ones that took place on Earth were so bad and boring. Then the jerks from Earth arrived at Elysium and it all got worse. For the record: our "hero" wanted to go there to save his own life (not the little girl's, whom he didn't even let finish her hippo story), the villain had an accent annoying as hell and was a douche, and Foster's talent was wasted.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Elysium

Wasted effort! The effects and settings were really cool and interesting so it's a shame that the acting was all over the place. Damon REALLY phoned it in, Foster was just weirdly lame and Copley chewed the scenery with unconvincing fire and brimstone. The plot was really pedestrian and the score recycled about every major blockbuster score from the last 20 years. Well, at least the images were pretty to look at.

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Elysium

Elysium is a prime example of a somewhat interesting concept - but by no means groundbreaking - wrapped in nice visuals (as one would expect) to compensate for zero substance. There's no story. There's only action. And to what intent? Contemporary science fiction is yet to stand for something. Terrible, terrible film.

  • Joe Hackman's rating of the film Elysium

Half-baked action flick with a great sci-fi premise. The most fascinating parts for me weren't the gun fights but the dystopic undertones - what happens when we drain the earth of its natural resources and overpopulate it to shit? Elysium addresses real 21st century problems and then takes them in different direction that manifests lots of explosions in lieu of real philosophical insight. Yawn.

  • Trevor Tillman's rating of the film Elysium

An amalgam of the failings of 21st century capitalism—from income inequality, to closed borders, to the inaccessibility of basic health care, to factory work with no safety standards. This is perhaps the one high concept film of this year so far that would fit nicely alongside the other, more idiosyncratic films that depict our decaying culture (Spring Breakers, The Bling Ring, etc). With a badass cyberpunk veneer.

  • Z's rating of the film Elysium

Not the masterpiece I was hoping for, but still a more than decent science fiction/action picture. I like the fact that Blomkamp wears his politics on his sleeve. The film is kind of simplistic. I think Matt Damon really holds it together. I wish Blomkamp had taken more time to really develop the characters, but I can't fault the film's relentless pace. I very much appreciated the well shot and comprehensible action.

  • Ryan Pearce's rating of the film Elysium

The shell of a modern science fiction masterpiece are there, waiting to be built upon. Great opportunity missed, unfortunately.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Elysium

Ok. If it had a little of 2001, a Space Odissey (in the way Elysium was filmed); if it had a little of District 9 in the detail of life on earth conditions; if it had a little of In Time in the sad concession between alowing a story to be told (in the 1st third of the movie) and then just letting the action burst... it would be ok, not genius or original. It just feels like the set up for the video game. Lazy. Poor.
