The two recent movies are far more grim. Even though there is an inherent absurdity to the excess on display, they seem less interested in the humor of horror. The absence of Bruce Campbell, the hammy protagonist of the original trilogy, is felt.

Claustrophobic and ultimately anti-cathartic, it’s ironically praise to say watching this is like being trapped in a nightmare. There are nods to horror classics like The Exorcist and The Shining, but Evil Dead Rise is more like a grimy throwback to the 1980s video nasty era.

Evil Dead Rise is a decent little splatter movie which contains just about enough to justify the franchise resurrection although perhaps not quite enough to demand that much more of it.

Evil Dead Rise indulges in the odd bit of homage, from its chainsaw-based final showdown to an amusing opening gag about Raimi’s trademark demon’s-eye-view tracking shots. But it mostly just wants to scare you witless – and... resoundingly succeeds.

[F]or fans of the franchise, Evil Dead Rises marks a welcome return to the seamless blend of humor and genuine scares and creepiness that Raimi created 42 years ago.

Drawing equally on the high-rise hell of Lamberto Bava’s Demons 2 (1986) and Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [Rec] (2007), and appropriating the flooded elevator of Stanley Kubrick ’s The Shining (1980), Evil Dead Rise brings all-new locations and dramatis personae, ditches altogether Bruce Campbell’s popular hero Ash (who even in Fede Alvarez’s 2013 sequel/reboot had a brief cameo), and dials down the comedy.

Irish writer/director Lee Cronin entertainingly updates the formula with confidence while remaining true to what has come before.

There’s enough black comedy in Evil Dead Rise to keep it from being entirely one-note (a fate that befell the 2013 Evil Dead), and Sutherland’s giddy performance when she’s possessed lifts this above the usual grim slaughter-fest.

With a brilliantly unhinged performance from Alyssa Sutherland, and a note-perfect ending that unlocks more tales to come, Evil Dead Rise revives the dormant franchise more effectively than the ‘Necronomicon’ itself.

It would seem declassé to refer to this as a “franchise extension”, a “reboot” or a belated “sequel”, as the film is more of a reconstruction or a study or a remix of the original. The same story, as told from a fresh, modern angle. And it absolutely slays.

Suggesting a more polished version of Terrifier 2, Cronin and his technical team––including director of photography Dave Garbett––know exactly what they’re doing and deliver all the bloody cheese grater scrapes, demonic strangulation by wire, and jump scares that are to be expected.
