Foxtrot Dirigida por Samuel Maoz
Eliding crucial historical distinctions means ignoring the subtle shifts in Israeli policy that have resulted in a long-term Likud power bloc and the collapse of the peace process, and an abandonment of systematic critique on the part of the Israeli left. (Amos Gitai’s films may be boring, but at least they are intellectually rigourous. Maoz is only concerned with high-toned middlebrow respectability. He’s Sam Mendes with tanks.)

I face the same dilemma every year: multiple requests for lists of my favorite films of the year, all of them due before I’ve had a chance to see all the contenders. And it looks like the biggest casualty of this process in this year’s roundup has to be Samuel Maoz’s provocative, original, and creatively vexing (at once hilarious and devastating) Israeli feature, FOXTROT, which for me very easily surpasses many of the more popular favorites such as THREE BILLBOARDS… and NORMAN.

The movie carries the excitement and punch of a fearless writer-director tackling contemporary material with a bracing cocktail of potent traditional drama, wild black comedy, and serrated style. . . . As Maoz invests signature props and defining actions with contrasting meanings, our hearts and minds expand to take them in.

Shmulik Maoz's film tells us a story not just of a soldier's death and the family's grief, but of grief that is passed down from generation to generation - grief that never ends. The horror of multi-generational war seeps into a society's consciousness like a cancer which is hereditary/congenital as well as contagious.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Foxtrot

Maoz's followup to 'Lebanon' is a strange mix of high drama and absurdity that mostly fails to gel into something meaningful or original. Broken into three sections and a coda the film is best served in the first and third sections with strong turns from leads Ashkenazi and Adler. The checkpoint setting of the middle section drags the movie down with its points far from subtle. Has its moments but a disappointment.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Foxtrot

CINEMA, DCP _ Samuel Maoz won the Jury Prize at Venise with this emotional second film. Here and there, some superb sequences, in particular the dance in the desert. The first minutes are suffocating, straight to the point. The violence is often expressed through the sound design the way PTA used the same trick in his film. Good eye for unexpected shots but altogether it is a greek tragedy that falls flat.

  • Renton47's rating of the film Foxtrot

What a sense for metaphor, my God! Preternatural staging, theatrical and dense with circling images and ideas but no sense of showiness or unearned style. Not surreal but I see why people describe it as such. It oscillates the grandiosity of its message and themes with the intimate and wider political turf, which don't always coalesce but I respect the ease with which it showcases ambition.

  • Aaron C Jones's rating of the film Foxtrot

Really incredible storytelling, visually and narratively. The cinematography in particular was incredible. The first 1/3 reminded me a lot of A Separation (my favorite film of this decade), and the rest reminded me a lot of Waltz with Bashir (one of my favorites of the 00s), so this is in great company.

  • FISCHER's rating of the film Foxtrot

Une rare intelligence scénaristique, rehaussée par une finesse psychologique indéniable et une pertinente interprétation collective font de cette œuvre une flagrante réussite cinématographique jonglant adroitement avec les genres et les affects... .www.cinefiches.com

  • Loz Loory's rating of the film Foxtrot

Loved the opening 15 minutes with the intricate choreography of the ambassadors of death. The middle segment about life at the checkpoint was well-choreographed. Was unnecessary to show the final death scene, as well as to have dialogue telling us exactly what happened. The audience can fill in the pieces, and it would be more haunting if we are forced to actively do so. The animated sequence was excellent.

  • William R Clark's rating of the film Foxtrot

2.5 Could bump this up. Couple with The Square for the year's most abstract movie party, where scene by scene details seem to operate on an entire other playing field from what the script thinks it is saying. The gamble of allegory, I suppose. For some, the simple message may adopt the quality of a mantra, for others, the labor it takes to reach it won't be justified. Middle section perhaps too good for this movie.
