Kung Fu Hustle is like Jackie Chan on crack! :) Honestly, I didn't think this would work, but I was wrong! It combines martial arts action, some Jackie Chan goofiness and strong cartoon feel. Sounds crazy? Yes! Because it is crazy! Nice visuals, great action and humour, interesting characters.
This is one hell of a ride. Just absolutely insane shit going on here, and an incredibly impressive one man show from Mr. Chow who seemed to do everything on this movie. Loved the action, the humor was hysterically funny and the cartoon logic was wonderful. It's always impressive when movies don't have a single dull second, and let me tell you every moment of this wonderful movie is beyond entertaining. Loved it!
Along with 'The God of Cookery' this is Chow's great cinematic triumph. With a cartoonish zeal Chow embraces the martial arts film spinning his own comedic take on the tradition. The action is quite sublime throughout but so is the characterizations and the clever scripting. A blast on first viewing back in '04 and even better now.
Stephen Chow is one of the only filmmakers I know of to creatively use CGI. I'm not opposed to computer effects but I do feel like its taken for granted and that's what keeps it from having any real weight. With Chow its essential to his aesthetic which is something like a unique combination between Kung Fu, Chuck Jones and Hollywood musicals. A must see for fans of the genre.
THIS FILM WAS SO DUMB & SO BADASS at the same time. This is one of the darkest comedies i've ever seen. 4.5 stars. I can't believe I rated it so high but this is different from those pointless comedies you usually see, it's a piece of badass martial art + comedy + brilliant acting/directing.
This is a martial arts film with a twist. I wasn't sure at first, but after a couple of watches i really think it holds its own. It has a story to it, that produces comedy with martial arts and i felt this allowed it to be extravagant without being over the top.
