First, the film assumes that its characters are much more appealing than they really are... econd, the screenplay assumes that sex offender registries, secondary sexual characteristics, and scatological distress are inherently funny... Third, unforgivably, the movie has a condescending white savior theme, while the characters of color exist only to be saintly and/or be farted at.

Despite the enjoyable chemistry between its leads and a promisingly offbeat premise, the buddy comedy does a better job of betraying its filmmakers’ lack of imagination than it does conjuring any real laughs.

That transparent energy is infectious whether you approve of the subject matter or care about the motivations. It’s needed, too, since the protagonist (Melanie Lynskey’s Hannah) is hardly a role model worthy of sympathy.

As with “A Case of You” (which was directed by Kat Coiro), “Lady” could be worse, but it’s unfunny and pedestrian enough to make you wonder why so many talented people apparently didn’t realize they were lowering their game.
