MIDNIGHT FAMILY is a remarkable quasi-hybrid notable for its seeming like it demands not only to exist but to exist in very much the way it does exist. It is a kind of fly-on-the-wall vérité but makes exemplary use of narrative film techniques. I sense that "narrative film techniques" extend here into the domain of collaboration w/ the movie's subjects. Documentary, hybrid, whatever; above all a vital urban cinema.
