[A] story so slender that it feels more like a TV special, the kind cranked out by a popular franchise to keep up audience interest in between the actual feature films.

It’s ludicrous in the year 2023 to make a whole movie about migrating birds and not explicitly acknowledge the impacts of climate change and light pollution on their journey... [but] Migration is otherwise a thoroughly charming picture.

The movie was directed by Benjamin Renner, but the dominant artistic voice is that of the screenwriter Mike White... White is vegan, which explains the insistent meat-is-murder angle throughout, although considering that “Lotus” is so disdainful of tourism, the perspective on travel here may be surprising.

Benjamin Renner’s new comedy Migration offers a winning combination of a charming narrative and distinctive animation style.

Renner takes to a larger moviemaking scale like a duck to water: “Migration’s” mélange tastes accessible enough, but his ingredients give it a soupçon of distinctive flavor.

It is very silly and often strange, but it’s also sweet and funny, and damn it all if you don’t start to really care about this odd little family.

And yet in all this, there’s never a moment when anything feels truly at risk. While we don’t wish active harm on the family... we can’t pull for them because we don’t know who they are, what they want or why they should get it.

Without the discounting the often witty dialogue... and factoring in Keegan-Michael Key’s winning turn as the chef’s patois-speaking parrot, the film’s more terrestrial rinse-repeat cycle of chases and escapes has a somewhat perfunctory feel – a fact made all the more apparent by a narrative that views this business as necessary pit-stops, and not much more.
