While this film has plenty moments of sappiness, there's so much more about it that rings true. Besides being a charming and heartfelt story about child-like faith, its points about commercialism and the spirit of Christmas remain absolutely relevant to this day (maybe even more so). The performances are also top-notch, particularly a remarkable Natalie Wood and Gwenn's definitive portrayal of Santa Claus.
Ironic to see a movie that tries to recapture the Christmas spirit in a time period where everything Christmas related now seems authentic. Although silly at times, it manages to capitalize from that and conclude the story with powerful ending that can effect even cynical souls. Edmund Gwenn is an ultimate Saint Nicholas and the movie is a fine companion with "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Shop Around the Corner".
It may be a big ad for Macy's here or there, but this charming film rests on the gentle shoulders of Edmund Gwenn. He creates one of the definitive representations of Claus in cinema history. Yes, it's very Capra-ish, but try not being ecstatic during the court decision. And even if it loses some of it's power when Gwenn is absent, this is definitely a bonfire classic, Christmas movie or otherwise.
Great, great movie. Witty. Well-acted, well-directed. Intelligent story. Everything you want in a holiday film. Natalie Wood delivers one of the best child performances of all-time. You really believe she is as icy and cynical at first and you totally believe her disappointment and disbelief at the end. Just one of the best.
This is one of those movies that you are absolutely sure that won't get made ever again... and you'll miss every little bit of it. Yes, it's corny, but it's a wonderful inspiring fantasy that makes us dream and believe. A true fairy tale.
7.9/10, "A shaggy-dog story promulgating ultimate kindness and Christmas spirits, without giving up its tangy economic and political connotations, a magnificent gem for all seasons and all ages alike." https://wp.me/p1eXom-4mj
