MISIÓN IMPOSIBLE: SENTENCIA FINAL

Christopher McQuarrie Estados Unidos, 2025
Jacobin
As always, the stunts are impressive. But no force on Earth can make Ethan Hunt a compelling character... The first hour is a slurry of incoherent flashbacks to catch you up on all that’s happened in the franchise, as if you cared.

[Final Reckoning] forgets so much of what makes this franchise memorable in an unwieldy and truly clunky first hour that plays like the longest “Previously On” you’ve ever seen. Repetitive and pretentious to the point of parody, it’s the worst segment in the entire franchise. That the film recovers as much as it does might be the most impressive mission that Ethan Hunt has ever proven possible.

Once it drags itself out of greatest hits replay mode, the film has plenty of cards to play... All the fuss and complication wrought by the AI plot falls away as McQuarrie whisks us back to the early days of cinema, with a neat sideways glance at Cruise’s role in Top Gun.

Whereas previous films in the franchise... spun gold from preposterous plot turns and the lightly goofy tradecraft... Final Reckoning is one long slog: frequently incomprehensible, almost entirely up its own ass... Having to sit through nearly three hours of M:I making like Ethan Hunt is the Messiah is not just exhausting: It’s a total misread of what makes these movies so fun.

Very likely, you'll walk out of the cinema with a rush and joy, marveling over the stunts and heroics. But if you linger on the details of Final Reckoning, you begin to notice plot holes and dangling threads. You may get hung up on the tonal shifts that feel less like a flowing dance — as they did in Dead Reckoning — and more like a frenzied battle between ideas.

Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning is wise for having mostly abandoned the flimsy setups of its predecessor and instead creating the ultimate collection of some of the best heart-pounding action sequences of the entire franchise.

Even when the plot kicks into a higher gear, The Final Reckoning never quite settles into the cheerfully goofy groove that propelled the franchise toward its peaks... The Final Reckoning gives [Cruise] enough concluding flourishes to make the send-off just about succeed, but it nearly drowns that endeavor out with a constant stream of thundering applause.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning leans so heavily on the entire seven-film backlog behind it, spooning in remember-this decades-old film clips as though we should all have this stuff front-of-brain, that it’s essentially four-fifths of a new film... Action films are supposed to be all about visual precision, modulation, and surprise, but McQuarrie’s films are as dull as exercise routines.

The Final Reckoning is a film about legacy, and in that way, it’s both the series’ most self-referential installment and also its most sentimental. Not only are there numerous callbacks and unexpected cameos... but McQuarrie has resolved to connect nearly all of Hunt’s adventures into one, coherent narrative throughline. To his credit, this largely works.

Final Reckoning is a noble exemplar of a dying breed: the big, dumb, fun action blockbuster with a bona fide movie star at its center, putting it all on the line—and hanging on for dear life—just to keep us at the edge of our theater seats.

With Cruise's charisma feeling strangely dialled down in the early stages and the supporting cast issued with signs that read, 'Will do exposition for close-ups', Final Reckoning gets stuck in missionsplaining amid the IP stitching... But around the 70-minute mark longtime director Christopher McQuarrie's movie really comes into its own and rages until the close.

The Final Reckoning” [is] the baggiest, least satisfying film of the McQuarrie quartet... For perhaps the first time in McQuarrie’s assured handling of these movies... he makes the mistake of detailing the action so thoroughly in advance that actually dramatizing it becomes almost superfluous.
