Les amants de Montparnasse

Jacques Becker, Max Ophüls Francia, 1958

Jim's rating of the film Montparnasse, 19

★★★ /DCP/ Becker’s unadventurous exploration of an artist’s self-destruction is lifted by the beautifully effective performance of Gerard Philipe, who captures the tragic emotional fragility of the artist's tortured life. Becker finds the most success in the first half, Modigliani’s drunken despair, the bitter abusive relationship with a great Palmer, the thrill of love with the lovely Aimee.
