This is one of those great and rare movies that has a byzantine plot full of surprises, but is also a powerful character study of a bizarre and driven woman.

In whichever tonality, the brilliant mix of melancholia and outrageousness in Mother suggests, uncannily, a remake of Billy Wilder’s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), in its unseen, complete, original version.

¿Qué dicen los demás?

  • Lars Åndheim's rating of the film Mother

What an abundance of ideas and eagerness: Spielberg-esque narrative hyperboles, rhythm, staging, knowledge of genre — allowing unfamiliar and original nuances. Motherhood as a mysterious and unbreakable curse: invisible shackles and uncut umbilical cords. But unlike Polanski's take on the subject (ROSEMARY'S BABY), Bong Joon-ho's recognises both the tragedy and beauty in the blood borne spell of maternity.

  • Den-Leroy Kangalee's rating of the film Mother

Thank you for Hye-ja Kim's wonderful performance. This was my first Bong Joon-Ho film; I couldn't get through "Snowpiercer." I felt it was too patronizing; too 'Hollywood' and it reeked of assimiliationist filmmaking. But "Mother" I thoroughly enjoyed. It was genuinely subversive, passionate...and seemed as if Bong really had something he wanted to share.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Mother

It's so refreshing to see a thriller where you have no idea what direction it's going to bounce in next. A labyrinth of personal/societal delusion, where the revelation along the way is that the kids aren't alright, and the adults can't be relied on either. Very well balanced and paced, with a perfectly weird atmosphere. Better than Oldboy, says I!

  • aubfuscate's rating of the film Mother

This movie had everything: a little lady gettin funky in a field, murder mystery, discussions of how we treat those with mental disabilities, discussions of slut-shaming, and intense psychological investigations. Every detail comes back, every characters adds complexity and richness, every shot is beautiful.

  • kampton's rating of the film Mother

. "Mother" is beautiful and subversive: a film about a Mother's love that is so deep and desperate that it is a kind of sickness, and, at once, a grappling with the nature of innocence and guilt as reflected in simplistic attitudes toward the mentally disabled..Joon-ho demonstrates a master's touch with scenes such as the Mother watching her boy pissing in the street (and covering it up) portending her ultimate act.

  • AKFilmFan's rating of the film Mother

Confounding expectations and taking a story to depths no matter how darkly-comic or weird seems to be Bong Joon-Ho's specialty and this one is no exception. It starts off slow with a simple premise then the mystery starts to unfold, with several complexities & twists along the way, and it keeps getting better. Thankfully the end scene fit the film and the performance by Hy-sa Kim was standout.

  • Zachary George Najarian-Najafi's rating of the film Mother

Even better than Memories of Murder. Joon-ho Bong is one of the most important filmmakers working today. His films have an understaded sense of classicism and elegance combined with hard edged suspense and deep sympathy for his characters. The performances are phenomenal, and the cinematography perfectly evokes life in the sleepy Korean hamlet. Don't miss this one.

  • nothere's rating of the film Mother

Excellent, excellent thriller. A great character driven story that pulls off one of the most satisfying conclusions to a thriller I've seen in a long time. Great cinematography and acting both make the film a triumph.
