Every turn in No Man of Her Own is a masterful screw-tightening—even before Helen's own sordid past comes back to haunt her and wrench her out of her new world of comfortable domesticity, we're on our toes, watching for the slightest suspicious glance or slip-up. Stanwyck is magnificent in the film, that famous grimace put to brilliant use throughout, finding countless variations on desperation.
