PHENOMENA

Dario Argento Italia, 1985
Uncomfortable and alien, PHENOMENA was a massive departure from the furious, hallucinatory series of supernatural horrors Argento had been making since SUSPIRIA. . . . Rather than a film that peels back the viscera of the commonplace to reveal the skeleton of evil underneath, he produced a bizarre, clinical film that resists our gaze, one that grows ever more cryptic the more it progresses.

Style over substance is fine, but I don't find much pleasure in Argento's abrupt, gaudy style (cf. De Palma's sinuous rhythms) - and maybe this is one for non-fans, my favourite of the five I've seen, a case where his seemingly wilful sloppiness and jagged, incoherent spatial sense are matched by totally loopy material.

Dario Argento at his most abstrusely enchanted.

[In the] criminally underrated Phenomena... Argento seamlessly blends supernatural elements into an 80s Giallo... This movie truly has it all: a mysterious killer, supernatural powers, murderous apes, and freaky mutant children.

As the audience gets used to its oddities, Phenomena seduces them into a world where logic doesn't work the same way as usual... The fact that its constituent parts don't quite fit together is ultimately one of its strengths, and Argento fans should make sure they don't miss it.

[Phenomena] displays [Argento's] battiest and most spiritual landscape... [It is] uniquely and fabulously scatterbrained. Argento’s insect fantasia is otherworldly.

[A] dim-witted horror... [Philomena] creaks along for its first hour or so, failing to work up any chills.
