After many years away, Silvestro returns from northern Italy to the Sicilian countryside of his childhood to visit his mother. On his journey, he has conversations with strangers in a port, fellow passengers on a train, his mother, and a knife-sharpener.

The local intonations and dialect produce an uncanny musicality, against Straub’s spare, distancing style, à la Bertolt Brecht. The poor of Sicilia, playing alongside professional actors, are as epic and stylized in their recitations as a Greek drama, and yet piercingly real.

The film dips between the ethnographic and the personal, within the framework of a man returning home to Sicily after a lifetime in America, and the Straubs’ convictions about pictorial austerity often liberate more than they constrict, allowing for a deceptively simple relationship between dialogue and image that brings out the interpersonal nature of the text they depict.

The visually simultaneous events, contrary in their implied duration, confound our sense of temporality and, perhaps inadvertently, deny the “absolute continuity” that Straub deplored as a falsity of bourgeois cinema. Straub-Huillet’s aesthetic abounds in such anomalies. One finds comfort, albeit austere, in encountering patented elements of the filmmakers’ approach in Sicilia!
