Is this the ‘best Bond ever’, as excitable pundits have claimed? The question is meaningless, because times change; you might as well ask if the 2010s are ‘better’ than the 1960s. But it’s certainly the best-looking Bond ever, ace cinematographer Roger Deakins conjuring some beautiful visuals. A fight in silhouette against the backdrop of a giant blue-neon jellyfish is a scrumptious image, and even the final act – which is the weakest – is worth it for some breathtaking views of misty Scotland.

The delight of Sam Mendes’s movie (what an odd way to begin a sentence!) is its indulgence in a kind of shameless showmanship that’s quite distinct from the all-out sensory assault practiced by so many contemporary action movies: it saves its money shots for when they’re actually going to be worth something.

Why is James disposing of women like cigarette ash again? When he fell in love with Vesper and had some balls (however much punishment they took) in Casino Royale, he brought female audiences back to the franchise. Now, his apparent concern for a young lady from the Macau sex trade neither prevents him from jumping her in the shower nor extends to his lifting a finger to save her? Even in the bad old days, he was better than that.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Skyfall

trailer superbly edited on the last 22 secs, a bit Chris Nolan, maybe, we'll see. I like what i've seen tho...

  • dionysus67's rating of the film Skyfall

The permanent state of emergency where enemies are invisible and thus call for suspension of due process and so on, assumes here a most ludicrous shape with one-dimensional characters (thankfully no more Dench as "M") and bloated villains (a most laughable Bardem). The steely shape of Craig (allegedly humanized in his vulnerability) caps the metaphysic of worker-soldier. The Patrice fight scene is its only merit.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Skyfall

Riffs on Bond's place in the modern-world; his role as anachronism: connecting the usual espionage & intrigue to a political narrative that is frighteningly relevant. There's a moral complexity here too often lacking in other Bond productions; the villain is grounded & sympathetic, while protagonists are ruthless & unfeeling. This is a Bond film that begins 'big’ then closes in to something more intimate & cinematic.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Skyfall

Skyfall doesn't find its footing until after the hour mark with Bardem's character. His character is sympathetic, if underused. In that 1st hour, Skyfall sadly takes from the overdone action films that show their aging hero past their prime-- trying to be more complex but moving into banality-- before it's Bond by way of Nolan doing Peckinpah, and it does get better, even if its soul of fun is already lost.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Skyfall

After two entries that went out of their way to reinvent Bond as a lethal agent who didn't give a damn if his martini was shaken or stirred, I find it odd that that the filmmakers tie themselves in knots trying to turn Daniel Craig into 'that guy' we all know from 50 years of pop culture. The incessant callbacks to Bond history prove distracting, as does the film's blase' attitude about Bérénice Marlohe's fate.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Skyfall

Ridiculous plot contrivances - that Silva engineered the events 'just so' completely falls apart on repeated viewings - and total lack of continuity to The Other Two aside, this is a still a cracking British thriller. The abandoned island scene is a classic from start to finish, and the epilogue is lovely. Best of all is the gorgeous photography in the Scottish highlands. Oh, and Finney's "Welcome to Scotland!" (4.5)

  • Richmond Hill's rating of the film Skyfall

Is criticism worth it with this? A tidy collection of all the usual synthetically violent, casually sexual and skin-deep elements. If approached as a cinematic extension of Gentleman's GQ it's a glossy way to spend an empty headed couple of hours but no more. If pressed, I suppose I'd prefer such nonsense to be as well turned-out as this over even the more vacuous human-animation that clutters up our cinemas.

  • your fiend mr. jones's rating of the film Skyfall

My favorite film of 2012. Consistently setting up- then taking the piss out of- Bond archetypes. Look at it this way- if Roger Moore had been given this script, he would've had a stroke to stop his eyebrow from arching. The franchise was waiting for an actor and then it got a whole cast-ful to pull off this celebration of Bond's greatest relationship.
