CÓDIGO FUENTE

Duncan Jones Estados Unidos, 2011
Certainly far more modest about its ostensibly cerebral subject matter than a variety of other recent blockbusters, Source Code really is a thinking man’s sci-fi.

Jones, who trained as a philosopher, has the intellect and the inclination to explore the implications and deeper meanings of the issues his film raises. He does it with a light though by no means frivolous touch, while never taking his foot off the accelerator.

With a twisty, mind-bending plot that frequently changes direction and occasionally overreaches, “Source Code” wouldn’t work at all without a cast with the determination and ability to really sell its story. With Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright in the key roles, that’s just what it has.

Jones has made an accessible sci-fi that delivers on fast-paced action, lots of explosions, sharp dialogue, while still using sci-fi as a means to explore powerful themes about identity and sacrifice. Even when the story steers towards a forced "happy" ending, it still comes up with enough ambiguity to make the trip worthwhile.

Source Code is a terrifically exciting and hugely enjoyable sci-fi thriller... For pure entertainment, there's nothing around to touch it... Jones has put himself into the front-rank of Hollywood directors, the kind who can deliver a big studio picture with brains.

Jones has the right spirit, Gyllenhaal and Monaghan are adept at playing their variations on the eight minutes, and here's a movie where you forgive the preposterous because it takes you to the perplexing.

Jones creates a sense of intimacy that draws you to the characters, so that the tension comes from your feelings for them and not purely from plot twists. This intimacy makes [Source Code] feel more personal than industrial, and that’s also part of its appeal.

Working from a tight script by Ben Ripley, Jones creates scary, hairy, high-octane tension. Disbelief? Suspended, until the logic lapses kick in later. It’s a small price to pay for a ride that starts at wild and accelerates from there.

The more confusing Source Code remains, the better it is... Based on its thrillingly fractured first half — not to mention Moon in its entirety — Jones seems much smarter than he allows the film to be in the end. It wriggles out of its own intriguing puzzle.

The cumulative dramatic effect of “Source Code” relies on an isolated character learning to escape the infrastructure that holds him down. The film’s otherworldly premise does push a high concept past its breaking point, but the emotional core is grounded in universal themes and allows the film to geek out with compassion to spare.

Rather than get bogged down in the scientific explanations, Ben Ripley’s intricate script and Jones’s brisk direction invite us to climb aboard and enjoy the ride. But if you want to dig deeper, there is some serious stuff about a guy lost in fragments of time, groping towards a sense of his own identity.

Source Code has a velocity that helps alleviate nagging questions about the logic of this time-space conundrum, with Jones’s direction proving slick, efficient, and... free of self-consciously stylized gestures.
