THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Marc Webb Estados Unidos, 2014
The Amazing Spider-Man 2's darker aspects, such as Gwen's fate or Max's certifiable mental-illness-cum-transformation into Electro, suggest Webb as a filmmaker willing, but dissatisfied, to toe the franchise line. These inclinations explain not only his adept play with canted angles throughout, but also his decision to shoot his follow-up on film, rather than the now industry-standard digital.

Let's hear it for Andrew Garfield, with his shy smile and the hint of a quiver in his voice. Let's hear it for Emma Stone, with her air of delight in everything tempered by those moments when her eyes flash, making clear that she's no-one's little princess. Let's hear it, above all, for the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who've made exuberance their watchword in the rebooted Star Trek franchise and bring more of the same to this Spider-Man sequel...

The problem isn't that all these elements are so unoriginal; it's that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 rehashes them with so little verve, clarity or inspiration. The film is somehow both rushed and tedious. It takes forever for Electro to emerge, and forever for anything interesting to happen between him and Spider-Man. When they do face off, the action is fast, shrill and incoherent — more F/X demo reel than actual movie.

Mr. Webb has some fun with the image of Spider-Man swinging through the urban canyons, and there are moments — as when the image freezes on the tucked, airborne Spider-Man ready to spring into action like an Olympian — the movie taps into the giddy freedom and near-unboundedness that the character's physical transformation has brought him... Once he comes down to earth, though, the movie does, too, with scenes of heavy destruction that quickly grow monotonous.

Like the first film in this rebooted series, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is as much about a boy growing up as it is about heroes and villains. The problem is that these two aspects are equally key in creating a satisfying blockbuster—and the filmmakers can't reconcile them. The result is an overlong, at times almost plot-free soap opera that introduces a wealth of characters and dips into a wide variety of subplots, but never comes together as a story.

The script is the biggest part of the show here, with spiraling-out histories and detours that are as inconsequential as they are unconvincing. This surplus of story not only makes the few kinetic plot lines and action sequences feel rushed, but it also drowns out the welcome sense of pulpy characterization that the filmmakers indulge.

...When the pay-off finally arrives, it hardly even matters. Events have already been set into motion. The scene serves to clumsily fill a motivational gap, but achieves little else. This is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in microcosm. A series of dazzling set-pieces strung together with a threadbare narrative and the most perfunctory characterisation imaginable.

Rebooting the blockbuster Marvel franchise just five years after Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3," it couldn't claim to be a film anyone needed. The swiftly delivered "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" finds no solution to that redundancy, but it acrobatically spins enough sound and fury to distract from the issue, while the tinderbox chemistry between leads Andrew Garfield andEmma Stone delights once more.
