It has inspired as many critical interpretations since the filmmaker’s death in 1963 as Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, or Bergman’s Persona. Like those works, The Blood of a Poet carries a historiography spanning decades that includes myriad interpretations—iconographic, psychoanalytic, semiotic, structuralist, and so on—and also like those works, it’s possible that it merely exists outside interpretation altogether.

The displaced narcissism of the artist has perhaps never been depicted so frankly as in this early short by the French master, in a scene where a man paints a mouth that comes to life as he makes love to it. Elsewhere, Cocteau teases out other aspects of artistic creation, even depicting mythic inspiration as something close to a legitimate history of poets and sculptors. Cocteau’s special effects bring inanimate objects seemingly to life, both indebted and uncontrolled by their makers.

[It’s] nothing if not surreal, providing only the briefest, flimsiest baseline of reality before moving permanently into a netherworld of pure imagination. Few drug-induced visions, however, can match the playful ingenuity of this freewheeling assault on the senses, which eschews conventional narrative in favor of one mesmerizingly bizarre image after another.
