Coixet relays the novel’s psychological acuity, yet her film is marred by Julie Christie’s plodding narration, an intrusive score, and Clarkson, so memorable in the director’s previous movies Elegy and Learning to Drive, but here needing to flex more of the steel behind the silk brocade.

Coixet has a lyrical sense of place, and she has made a charming, well-acted adaptation that ably conjures visual pleasure out of the written word and evokes Fitzgerald’s love of art and her prescient elegy for the brick-and-mortar literary bookstore. But the movie is seriously weakened by its commercial anxieties.

A more conventional filmmaker might have nudged this scathing attack on class entitlement in the romantic-comedy direction that early scenes seem to tease. Instead, Ms. Coixet highlights the undertow of subtle savagery in her genteel material, giving its picturesque setting — an English coastal village in 1959 — a more sinister, cynical cast.
