A biological weapon gone awry is only the start of problems in the little town of Evan’s City, Pennsylvania. Bouts of insanity in the populace are leading to murder and rioting, until the US Army turns up – and things really start going to hell.

Fascinating anti-military sci-fi thriller taking up THE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD's framework with an important modification. This time, the heroes have to confront two kinds of enemies : army soldiers disguised as penguins and civilians gone mad. They are the Crazies. A nervous editing enables the director to somewhat mask his budget pressure. Highly recommended.
This is George Romero's no holds barred take on a viral catastrophe, where the chaos spreads into the narrative and the plot ends up consuming itself, product of having too many ideas going around and too little time (and budget) to weave them seamlessly into a fully satisfying whole. This is a deranged vision and an early reminder of better things to come from the late maverick.
I don't know about the recent remake, but I know the good thing about this film is how you really can't tell which madness caused by the weapon and which was caused by panic. An excellent work similar to Martin. No need for remake though.
“Crazies” is essentially a war film, and a rare one in that it depicts both sides - state & fugitives - rather equally although there’s no doubt where the guilt lies. I appreciate the cynical conclusion that it draws, and the bomber in the air is truly chilling. Yet it’s low on skills. There’s way too much shouting around, the plot is partly silly and there are some oddities (like fighting viruses with antibiotics).
i wanted to give this one a higher rating because of the romero zombie canon which i am a big fan of. i couldn't. maybe because i'm not a teenager satisfied with basically any type of gore action anymore. there are too many holes in this work. from unconvincing military (dis)abilities to inconsistent mind decay of characters, both infected and healthy... it was interesting enough but lacking the spice of excellence.
