Considering the cast and Angelopoulos' usual standards, although a brave film, this is also a disappointing one, too elusive and wide-ranging to grip onto or be really touched by- ambition and faults that reminded me of Wenders' Until the End of the World
Angelopoulos' ambitious scope in confronting the forces of History continues here in a hypnotic, yet flawed film. To be sure, the traumas of the Greek Civil War resurface here alongside the disillusionment of Soviet orthodoxy and the collapse of the Eastern bloc. However, the view on the 'end of history' as a surveillance society or as multiplex cinema spectacle is pertinent but the film's poetic lustre is mawkish.
A disappointing effort overall, bolstered by two brilliant performances from Ganz and Piccoli, but Dafoe (a usually very good actor) is weak and so is Jacob. Angelopoulos doesn't feel the same here, no longer are we blessed with the astounding visuals and the intricate storyline, instead we are left with a fairly uninteresting plot for a film that looks regular. The soundtrack is good but this is not one of his best.
sometimes while I'm watching a movie I start to think like this would actually should be in words this works perfectly as a long story 'novella' or maybe novel with improvents and more details I think dust of time would be an amazing 'novella' because it feels like some parts are missing in the movie angelopulos movies always have that unique harmony with every scene but this one just doesn't work
