Making Mick a sexualized teenager kind of distracts from the loneliness and isolation that was so central to the book's theme. Maybe I am just biased. Alan Arkin is great though, which is the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one.
I don't think anyone could've played Singer better than Arkin. This is one of my top 5 fav novels and I knew I would be a little disappointed going in bc nothing could live up to what I thought in my head it would be. Still, looking past this, a very good and quite faithful adaptation. I wasn't moved to tears like the book, but a really good film version. 4 stars
