a way ahead of its time masterpiece with uniformly great acting. Rod Steiger takes the cake and Jonathan Winters (x2) is astounding. Any film that features Margaret Leighton, Lionel Stander, AND Liberace has to be seen!
Hilarious. Surprisingly, the best Waugh adaptation I've seen. Zany, silly, odd, and quite lovely. A highly exaggerated satire of the funeral industry and for that reason, as a seething black comedy, it works supremely well. Fortunately, there are some good people who are trying to turn the tide regarding greedy charlatans, but we'll always have Joyboy.
I always thought this movie was funny and unhinged. Not wasteful, like the also funny and unhinged 1967 "Casino Royale" but with a great comic spirit. Milton Berle, Rod Steiger and Margaret Leighton are especially good. One jarring note: they have dubbed Barbara Nichols thereby stripping her of her essence.
