¿Qué dicen los demás?

  • Kenji's rating of the film The Silent Village

Impressive little film in which the South Wales mining village of Cwmgiedd plays itself under Nazi occupation, as if it were the Czechoslovakian mining village of Lidice wiped out for its resistance. Ironically the Nazis suppress the Welsh language, as the English had done (and not long before), but the main messages are of determined solidarity with fellow miners and combatants against Hitler's abominable lot.

  • Richmond Hill's rating of the film The Silent Village

Semi-observational but wholly politicised; rich in Jennings’s gorgeously simple technique of ‘mass observation’ & associative editing. Somewhat similar to Went the Day Well? it has a bitty structure with a case of ambition outstripping budget. What is now striking is not the hypothetical invasion but the actual loss of community such villages have since suffered with the collapse of industry & rise of globalisation.
