With sharp writing, cleverly shot sequences, and a great soundtrack, The Worst Person in the World is a funny, yet sensitive look at real life through the eyes of a young woman facing difficult quarter-life decisions.

This is far and away Trier’s best work to date. As for Reinsve, who was on the brink of abandoning acting altogether when this role came calling, it is surely the launchpad for a remarkable screen career.

[I]t is an incredible film that strikes a chord from the very first scene. It’s stunningly shot and refreshingly honest, extraordinarily gorgeous and phenomenally raw.

It’s the kind of film audiences fall in love with — then break up with, then miss terribly, before finally realising that it was as good as movies get, if only they had realised it at the time.

It is a film that dodges genre pigeonholes, with threads of romantic comedy and coming-of-age drama weaving into one, and a mournful final act that offers a further impactful gear-change.

Reinsve is ravishing throughout, as is her always-perfect hair, and the camera adores her. But she’s actually the most underwritten character. She has less to say than any of the men and, aside from one incident – a magic mushroom trip – her interior life was as much a mystery to me by the epilogue as it was in the prologue.

That young women of Julie’s (and my) generation feel disoriented by the enormous technological and social changes we’ve lived through is certainly part of Trier’s thesis – but it also feels obvious... Julie’s uncertainty and vulnerability are human – but the way Trier seems to romanticise them can’t help but feel tired.

To say that The Worst Person in the World was bottom-centric would be an understatement. It is adorably earthy. That said, it can also be conservative with a small ‘c’.

[The Worst Person in the World is] a film to send you spilling from the foyer with furious debate and a strange, satisfied sadness... Trier should be celebrated for his ambition and, more importantly, for going there.

Many of The Worst Person in the World’s “12 chapters and an epilogue” are among the best short films you could ever wish for... Bounce along as Julie might and [the film is] a lively, sexy, eventful two-hour adventure.

Whether Julie, the young-ish woman at the heart of Joachim Trier’s excellent The Worst Person In The World, really needs defending (as the wry title perhaps implies) will depend on your perspective, and perhaps whether you identify with her, or with someone like her. There’s certainly a light sense that she’s on trial here.

The Worst Person in the World carries a shimmery feeling of definitiveness to it. It’s the rare piece of art actually invested in why an entire generation can seem so aimless and indecisive.
