As a comedy, the film is a little light on laughs, but Squibb and her co-star, the late Richard Roundtree, bring considerable charm to what might otherwise be a by-numbers affair.

Too often in films, the elderly are painted as tragic, dotty, or definitely past their prime. Thelma rejects this ageist trope (see also: Swan Song and Grumpy Old Men)...

For me there is a spoonful of sugar too many in this film... Squibb is however really good: no other casting is conceivable, and it is good to see her get the lead turn she deserves.

Squibb’s portrayal is inspiring, as she exhibits a great deal of spunk, proving that old age can still be an exciting time.

Thelma generates clever, inoffensive fun from assorted elderly challenges.

Under the gimmick, Squibb’s charm, her gutsiness, and her sharp, subtle humor fill the movie with warmth and veracity.

But needless to say, the whole film rests on June Squibb's shoulders. She brings to the part 78 years of acting experience, which is a joy to watch.

Thelma’s emphasis on the unique pleasures found at different stages of life works because we can see the trust it places in Squibb as its front-and-center star.

June Squibb as an unlikely yet satisfying action star. It’s a cute idea, celebrating the willpower and determination of a 93-years-young woman. If audiences are willing to suspend their disbelief for “The Beekeeper,” why not do the same when it’s Squibb on a rampage?

Thelma somewhat lets down its non-elderly cast... That, though, doesn’t stop the heart of this warm and strangely affirming tale that just so happens to feel like an action film from shining through. Even then, the cinematic world didn’t know it needed June Squibb and Richard Roundtree doddering away from an explosion until it happened.

Thelma is slickly made, real-life grandmother sweet, overall warm and winsome. It’s likely to draw laughs if you’ve ever coached someone on how to use a computer, tears if you’ve ever loved an elderly person who held tightly to their dignity. And Squibb is as understatedly funny and commanding as you’d expect.

“Thelma” is a totally pure delight that gives June Squibb a much-deserved leading role. Her and Roundtree are fabulously paired and Margolin’s script is breezy and sharp in equal measure.
