They Shall Not Grow Old Dirigida por Peter Jackson
The film functions less as a history lesson than an experiential deep dive into the mundane and traumatizing realities of soldiering.

The result is, in its way, as eerie and enthralling, albeit with a completely opposite emotional valence, as the moment in “The Wizard of Oz” when Dorothy’s world goes from black and white to color. There, it means the coming of magic; here, it means an entry to Hell.

A landmark film, at once a technological achievement, a tour de force of cinematic history-telling, and a shot over the historiographic bow in terms of its methods.

  • Michael H. CLAES's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

Real war, blood, powder, bodies exploded, gassed, dismantled, shown in their terrifying & wild reality. The unimaginable bravery of a million Englishmen. A major testimonial & an absolute masterpiece === La guerre réelle, le sang, la poudre, les corps explosés, gazés, démantelés, montrés dans leur réalité saisissante & sauvage. La bravoure inimaginable d'un million d'hommes anglais. Docu majeur & chef d'oeuvre absolu

  • Trevor Tillman's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

As big an accomplishment as Jackson has ever pulled off. Amazingly transportive. Surpasses Ken Burns in injecting life into century-old footage, still photography, and propaganda materials. Color, 3D, proper frame rates, dynamic foley and voice acting create a new level of intimacy and immersion. I admire the audacity of sticking with VO solely from the veterans themselves. An important contribution to civilization.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

A technical marvel and storytelling achievement but criminally apolitical in its deconstruction of WWI. The centrist notion that its self-ordained objectivity somehow transcends politics is hubris personified. War is never apolitical and is very rarely necessary. Excusing the historical context that surrounds an escalation towards war is why imperial remnants within the Western world remain assertively ignored.

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

Short but exhausting. Beautiful but so full of ugliness. After reading books and watching films about the trenches, this is the first time you can actually feel 1% of the dread they brought. A technological marvel that brings humanity back to this story, but the real tour de force is not really what you see, it's what the veterans tell. You've really never seen anything like this.

  • Zac Weber's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

Peter Jackson not only revives the images, but also the sounds and individualism of the young men who fought in the first World War. It's a stunning visual spectacle that transforms the entire wretched experience into something that seems relatable for people born generations after the last artillery shells were fired. I loved Jackson's transparency at the end of the film.

  • Jason's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

Almost crazily ambitious and totally arresting as pure audio-visual experience, THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD cannot help but be of some considerable historical interest, though it primarily grips by way of its phenomenology of the archive. It is a supernatural kind of necromancy, 3D trench warfare in the uncanny valley. Though it has doubtlessly been organized thoughtfully, the enveloping intensity nullifies chronology.

  • msmichel's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

Jackson's gob-smacking masterful documentary is a blend of archival first person narrative and actual footage shot during WWI exclusively. That footage however is given the Weta digital treatment that turns the grainy centenary footage into vibrant, colourful imagery that gives new weight and empathy to the images presented. By relying on this technically assisted footage Jackson has created something respectful.

  • mpho3's rating of the film They Shall Not Grow Old

Pretty incredible achievement on so many fronts, the Western front not withstanding. When you think about the sheer magnitude of the Great War itself, that video was not only captured during the war but that it survived to be restored in an era that has technology and skilled craftspeople to do this, etc. etc. And Jackson's in-theatre commentary pre- and post-film is the icing.
