The possibility that magic exists within us . . . comprises the crux of López's new genre-bending film Tigers Are Not Afraid, which has captivated Guillermo del Toro, Stephen King, and many other viewers worldwide. Equally inspired by magical realism and hauntings real and imagined, the film plays like a documentary tinged with elements of the fantastical, and horror springing from unsuspecting corners.

Heartbreaking, thought-provoking and exquisitely beautiful in equal measure, López unflinchingly rejects the fetishization of young people and their experiences so typical of narratives about childhood trauma. Instead, she replaces it with compassion, intelligence and artistry of a purity and uniqueness that is very much her own.

López's fable has already drawn comparisons to Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth (2006) but has a phantasmagoric energy and modern urgency all its own.

Credit to López and her team of artists (especially the sound department) for making a film that defies genre categorization. This is the children’s version of “Annihilation,” a bold and visually inventive plunge into despair, depression and coping with guilt. I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Issa López.
