[W]ith The Creator, the British director Gareth Edwards finally gets to make the sci-fi spectacular he was always destined to tackle. And with this ambitious, ideas-driven, expectation-subverting, man-versus-machines showdown, he has co-written and directed one of the finest original science-fiction films of recent years.

An inspired, soulful piece of sci-fi, the endlessly stunning visuals all in service of a heartfelt, sensitive story. Gareth Edwards is the real deal — this is fantastic, enveloping cinema.

The Creator may be an effective interrogation of American imperiousness and imperialism, but it also has a tender, anguished heart.

Rich in atmosphere but short on substance, director and co-writer Gareth Edwards’ film has the look and tone of a serious, original work of art, but it ends up feeling empty as it recycles images and ideas from many influential predecessors.

The Creator is periodically clunky. Washington swings from stiff to charismatic alongside the film’s quality of dialogue and tone. It’s also a film that is unexpectedly very funny for 15 minutes and then almost never again. But Edwards presents himself as an ideas-on-his-sleeve kind of guy, who’s invested in readdressing the meaning behind some of the most commonplace sci-fi imagery.

despite the impressively sweeping C.G.I. running battles... the story’s engine produces the straightforward momentum of your average action blockbuster — one thing happens, then the next thing, complete with punchy (sometimes tin-eared) one-liners.

Edwards has been passed $80 million to craft another original sci-fi tale – and happily, this one is yet more entertaining and conceptually ambitious than his first.

[A]s imitative as Edward’s movie can be, it’s an undeniably impressive piece of work. Its concept and plot are easily identifiable, but the grand sci-fi dimension works well with a personal tale of love, heartache, parenthood, surrogate children, and consideration of humanity for all things living, breathing, or connecting data points with something that may even resemble a soul.

Though Washington does his best to infuse Joshua with some real grit and spirit, the spectacle of The Creator is the film’s real star, which isn’t quite enough to sustain a running time of more than two hours. Even so, The Creator is a high-level craft achievement that is undeniably cool on a big screen.

The Creator is likely to stand as the most impressive and immersive sci-fi movie of the year... notable for its remarkable resourcefulness, striking visual style, and resonant cultural themes.

It’s an intriguing, stimulating, exhilarating movie, which really does address – with head and heart – the great issue of our age, AI. I have to say that the splurge of action spectacle towards the very end means that some of the narrative tendons slacken a bit and the film loses focus on specific jeopardy. But there’s a tremendous boldness here and a readiness to conjure up an entire created universe.

Edwards’ direction is assured throughout, maintaining a cracking pace and orchestrating several thrilling action sequences before building to a climax that is both exciting and deeply moving... a powerful and original epic...
