'Twinless' is an interesting beast of a film... Once it starts to show its true colours, it's one of the funniest black comedies of the year.

Touching, hilarious and eventually enthralling... The movie’s strengths lie in its impeccable and often devastating performances, beginning with O’Brien’s conception of Roman... Even without its numerous rug-pulls, which occur early enough that the movie soon takes on an entirely different tone, Twinless is a masterful example of shifting cinematic POV.

[Sweeney] has made one the best and least easily classifiable films of the year... Like Straight Up, [Twinless] engages with fantasies of self that go beyond the simplicity of debunking ideas of storybook romance.

Twinless swerves effortlessly between comedy, melancholia and intense drama. James Sweeney has crafted such an unflinchingly funny, yet intense, narrative that is such a prime example of arresting storytelling.

Twinless is Farce-adjacent you could say, although the Solondzian darkness of its deeply fucked-up material keeps it from ever feeling a true Farce’s sense of bubbly effervescence—call it Cringe Farce. And it’s two times a winner.

A movie like this has the tendency to suggest three different ones all competing with each other... But Sweeney––who, in addition to acting and directing, wrote the script––has no trouble with lubrication, layering genres atop each other in a way that’s plausible and cohesive.

The title suggests the set-up, but there’s more to the twisty absurdity of this odd couple dramedy from James Sweeney... The screenplay, smarter (and perhaps more uncomfortable) than most, explores the tricky territory between grief and loneliness, where people are at their most vulnerable.

In taking a hyper-specific personal fixation and running with it, Sweeney has made a crafty friendship comedy that, in addition to being sotted with laughs both bitter and sweet, plumbs unanticipated emotional and thematic depths.

There are some twists and turns in this dark comedy, and your tolerance for those directions may vary – but for me at least, watching these two opposites attract and trauma-bond was exciting and satisfying.

As writer-director, Sweeney injects his sophomore effort with some amusing visual gags, coordinated costumes, and a look that’s far more thoughtful than your run-of-the-mill comedy, not to mention a handful of good punchlines. As an actor, though, he can seem a little lost when not delivering snippy zingers or long writerly monologues.

The film’s expansion to a throuple causes it to dramatically and comedically trip over itself, reaching for a forced catharsis whose unbridled violence runs counter to the film’s initial deadpan levity. That stumble makes “Twinless” hard to forgive, but its strong premise and cunning quips also makes the good parts difficult to forget.

Twinless is a masterfully crafted and thought-provoking dramedy that’s sure to leave you with much to grapple with. Beyond being thematically rich and carefully assembled, it’s also just a really good time. You’ll definitely laugh, you’ll probably cry, and there’s a good chance you’ll be looking out for Sweeney’s next project. I know I am.
