Bittersweet to see Glawogger's last footage. If he had been alive to realize the final cut, It may have been something much more ironic or biting. Monika Willi lovingly assembles his last work more like an epitaph or eulogy, and I feel very sad when I think of how we lost him so suddenly, way too soon.
Michael Glawogger's Documentary is a window on real life of underdeveloped countries. There is so much truth in this footage. Amazing choice of scenes. Surprised by seeing African athletes amputees playing soccer with help of crutches. Shocked by seeing kids trying to survive going through garbage. Life is not sweet, life can be brutal.
I once made a charity video which was dismissed by a critic as "development porn". This falls firmly within that category - aestheticised poverty served up for middle class Europeans, not helped by the British voice that appears sporadically, trying too hard to evoke 'Sans Soleil'. Yet it's frequently captivating, with the full mystery of watching and listening as an outsider. Should we watch/film as a boy is beaten?
really enjoyed this sort of ethnographic smorgasbord...watching this simultaneously pulled me out of a funk and deepened my worry for our future. while there are several moments of human/animal suffering, there's also many instances of connection and humanity....shot in lovely plainjane style, and the music was great...fave moments. the cripple's awesomely graceful soccer game, and the story of the dog at the window,
Spellbinding, it makes you wonder, this window on the world - seen from the perspective of the street, the train, the window looking out on to the world or into the lives within. What can one say, it's life and life only, and death. And in the end, transcendental. Film making at it's very best.
