Director Luis Buñuel constructs this 1954 motion picture on the foundation of Emily Bronte’s Gothic novel set in England. However, Buñuel substitutes a Mexican setting for the English one and Spanish names for the novel’s central characters.
Esta película no está presentándose ahora en MUBI, pero otras 30 increíbles películas sí lo están. Mira que está en cartelera
This was significantly better than I expected it to be! I loved just how unlikeable and absolutely insane everyone in this movie appeared to be. Honestly this felt like a companion piece to L'Age d'Or. I knew from the moment Alejandro smashed a window in to enter the house in the opening this would be a fascinating experience. Not great Buñuel, but it's incredibly enjoyable and extreme. And the ending is killer!
Among the very best form Bunuel's 'lesser known' works. Brimming with evil and 'ressentiment' this film adaptation of Bronté manages to portray a mileu where every possible fragment of compassion hides envy and joy at another's misfortune. Rarely has such a pessimistic universe been portrayed with such verisimilitude. Animals put to death 'survive' as beastly instincts in Bunuel's moral anthropology! Staggering!
Screening ~ An interesting Brontë adaptation that suffers a bit from some of the unintentionally hilarious acting, but overall it captures the spirit of the novel and Mistral is very convincing as Heathcliff. Ending is excellent! Just as bleak and blunt as it should be.
