My first Nomura film and it's a gem. An outstanding noir, in the Hitchcock/Woolrich mold, with a wonderful snowy setting in northern Japan. Definitely makes my 1960s list.

ASHES IN THE HOURGLASS

It's last 45 minutes are nothing but consistent exposition in contrast with the first 45 minutes which is drenched in mystery and uncertainty. This unbalance is easily it's worst trait but I also admire this odd and flawed structure. Aside from this element, the mystery's theme of fidelity and trust was obviously influenced by its post-war setting. It's characters are in the service of the plot and pretty forgettable

3.3 I enjoyed the first hour or so, it zips along at a fair pace and it shares a similar premise to Imamura's 1967 classic A Man Vanishes. Unfortunately the film begins to lose focus towards the denouement and fills in the blanks with a wordy "and then I did this and then I did that" style monologue.
