In the middle of the Venice Film Festival, and in the lead-up to the Toronto and New York fests, still the most “liked” poster of the last six months of my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram was a teaser poster that appeared in the run-up to Cannes in the spring. The poster was for was one of the most anticipated films of Cannes, a film that has since been disseminated to the world with a much tamer big-head poster and even tamer home video art. The Crimes of the Future teaser racked up nearly 2,000 likes and not far behind it was a gorgeous art print for Cronenberg’s 30-year-old Naked Lunch by the very talented (and seemingly Cronenberg-obsessed) Nick Charge that I posted a few months later.
As I’ve been doing for the past few years, every so often (and more recently, every six months) I like to collect and rank the most liked posters that I have posted in the previous 26 weeks as some sort of gauge of popular taste. This time around, as well as the dueling Cronenbergs, there are also two Apichatpong posters in the mix: a new-ish Thai poster for his latest masterpiece, Memoria, and the beautiful French-designed poster for his 2004 film Tropical Malady, an oldie-but-goodie which I posted to celebrate his 52nd birthday.
The Japanese poster for The Jerk was posted in honor of what would have been Carl Reiner’s 100th birthday, and the Soviet one for Solaris for what would have been Tarkovsky's 90th, but there were also a couple of sad obituary posts, including my own poster for Film Worker in honor of that film’s subject, Leon Vitali, who passed away a couple of weeks ago, and one of my all-time favorites, the drip-streaked poster for The Rain People, in honor of James Caan.
Half of the most popular posters were for new films, which was nice to see, including Caspar Newbolt’s stunning design for The Act of Coming Out, which I wrote about here. And there are two posters—one old and one new—by the ever-inventive Akiko Stehrenberger.
So, without further ado, here are the rest of the 20 most liked posters of the past six months of Movie Poster of the Day, presented, as always, in gently descending order of popularity.
