MUBI Podcast: Encuentros returns this week with a new special episode from Cannes.
MUBI Podcast Encuentros

This episode explores cinema as a ritual.

Oliver Laxe is a Spanish director, screenwriter, and actor, born in Paris. In 2011, his debut feature, All You Are Captains (Todos vosotros sois capitanes), premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight, and since then all his works have been premiered and awarded at Cannes: Mimosas (2016) won the Critics’ Week Grand Prix, Fire Will Come (Lo que arde, 2019) won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section, and this year he won the Jury Prize in the official competition for his fourth feature, Sirât (2024).

In his filmography, shot between Galicia and Morocco, Laxe has explored a metaphysical and spiritual character of cinema that frequently invokes a profound link between his characters and the elements of nature that surround them.

In an interview with the Viennale director and Italian programmer Eva Sangiorgi, Oliver talks about the musical and life experiences that inspired Sirāt, as well as his writing process with Argentine screenwriter Santiago Fillol.
