Dimitri Cachitev, a high-ranking officer in the Soviet army, tastes rice pudding in the middle of the battle of Stalingrad and realises that the war will never give him the pleasure that this dessert has given him. After this, he leaves the army and retires to Montejaque, a village in Malaga.
